Staurolite, also known as fairy cross stone, is a nesosilicate mineral that forms in interesting cross like, cruciform formations. The cross itself usually contains a mix of elements such as zinc, iron or aluminium and it can be found as the cross formation alone or, more commonly, on a matrix rock of schist. It is found worldwide.
The folklore of how staurolite came to be formed is that the fairies, upon hearing of the crucifixion of Jesus, cried so many tears that fell to earth and hardened into these fairy cross stones. Historically, the staurolite has been seen as a symbol of good luck and protection throughout the Christian faith.
Staurolite is said to bring about relief from stress and relaxation as well as to be useful for those trying to break a bad habit. It is said to increase our connection with the Earth.
