Lapis lazuli is not one single mineral, but a rock formed of several different minerals. Its composition includes lazulite, sodalite, calcite, and pyrite.

Lapis lazuli has been highly prized by ancient civilisations and has been known to have been mined as far back as 4000BC. Most notably, the ancient Egyptians used lapis to adorn the tombs and sarcophagus of their pharaohs and queens. It was also ground up to be used as the pigment, ultramarine, and as a cosmetic. The bible references sapphire in many places but is actually referring to lapis lazuli.

Lapis is said to be the stone of wisdom as it enhances memory and encourages a strong love of learning. it is also said to encourage loving and harmonious friendships as well as to promote success and prosperity.
